Parenting Best

February 17th, 2010

Took Bob to his Thursday morning private swim lessons today.  Only problem was, it’s Wednesday.  After everyone had a good chuckle, Bob’s benevolent leader did his lesson anyway.

After his lesson, I had planned on going to the library.  Usually we go once a week, the kids get three books, I get one book.  But we’ve been shamefully avoiding for the last few… months as I have lost a library book.  Well, guess who forgot to simply go across the street from the tattoo shop to the library and face the music?  Yah.  At least I remembered dog food.  Since they were totally out and didn’t get breakfast.

Oh yes, I am at the pinnacle of parenting perfection.

Picked up Suki and Dibly from the breeder Monday.  They had a 6+ week romantic holiday with her itty bitty buck Buford.  Despite enduring three hours of goats pooing and peeing in a small enclosed space, the roads were dry, the kids slept most of the way home, and I got to sit beside my husband for 6 hours.  Rock the monkey.

We’ve been doing lots of painting lately.  Using our juicer.  Had terrific pancakes for supper last night, with a honey chevre and some yummy summer berries courtesy of our deep freeze.  Delightful.

And now for the picture portion of our programme!

Now I am off to start dinner, fold laundry, empty the dishwasher, tidy the kitchen, feed goats and get started cleaning the bathrooms.  And keep the children from killing eachother with primo parenting entertainment.  (Stamping, painting… making red velvet cupcakes!)

what kind of paint do you use? so far all i’ve been brave enough to venture into is watercolors as she eats a lot of it.
do you use tempra? how do you feel about them ingesting it? zoey watches craig paint and he licks the brush all the time, so she wants to do that a lot when she paints, i dont think i can stop her!

Our liquid paints are Crayola. But they use A LOT of it. I really need to switch to tempera cakes. The set up where there is a cup, with a cake of colour in the bottom & a corresponding brush (a la play group) seems to make the most sense, and I hope to replicate something like that here. We have small water colours, but they get used up fast.

They eat it. Meeps also went through a phase where she would suck Crayola markers. On the marker end. I am sure she was eating more marker than food, seriously. The kids also love Sharpie. Sure, it SAYS “non-toxic”…. har har. It’s their favourite medium for drawing tattoos on themselves.

I guess, while I worry a LITTLE…. they love it and we have attempted to make the paints as safe as possible (I am sure some would balk at even Crayola, but pigment is pigment, I mean how safe is RED ever gonna be no matter WHO makes it). And I feel like we do SO much in every other arena that some paint is OK!! Pick your poisons, you know! (Just like I pick tattoos!)

Yeah, the brush licking…. Adults swear and drink hot drinks and stoke the fire and things kids can’t do. You could make it one of those things, or try to anyway if you were concerned about the quantity of consumption.

    Good luck and have fun!!!!!

Little hombre was too cute for reality, until I got to the daddy/daughter tea party!

I’ve done exactly the same thing with my library, I’m sure if I went in and explained they would be fine but no, avoid, avoid.

Bob and Maggie are so cute together, I’m sure they’ll be fighting/pretending to hate each other for at least the next 15 years but one day they’ll be so pleased to have each other!

heh, we’re painting out new bathroom this week, and mateo (13 months) got a fistful of primer that then made it into his mouth. thankfully, he didn’t get enough to need to call poison control or antything, but it certainly made me nervous!

I feel for you with that list of chores. I just now got the scream machine to sleep for the night (fingers crossed) and need to clean up HIS mess, then the kitchen, then laundry, etc. etc. etc. etc. There’s always something else to do. But honestly, I just want to sit here, drink some tea and work on my rag rug. Crocheting is so sooooooothing, and with the toddler down, Mommy just wants some quiet.

Our local library doesn’t ask you to pay your fines until you’ve collected $10 worth. I like that they’re very non confrontational. That probably would change if I lost a book. I’m sure yours will be nice.

Three books each? Is that just so they don’t get lost? I can’t help but pick up at least a dozen each time we go. I get so bored of reading the same books over and over. Also, Ash memorizes them so quickly, I imagine that he would get bored too.

  9. Twwly says:

Gillian – exactly. If I get any more than that they are gonzo! Bob memorizes like a madman also, but he likes it – he seems to really enjoy finishing the line… and reading to himself and sometimes his sister.

  10. Gillian says:

It always amazes me how fast ash picks up on books. He loves finishing the sentences, and just after two times reading each book, he knows most endings! Sponges, their little brains!

Adelaide has that tea set! it was given to her for Christmas and she plays with it all the time. What a great idea as well, that they are made from milk cartoons. Gradually the spoons and cups are disappearing and I have to hunt for them… her favourite thing to do is to put cheerios in the creamer and pour them out into the cups and then over the top of the cable box, and then she fake pours tea from the teapot. It’s so cute. When she is a bit older I’ll put some water in it, and we we can play with liquid, but right now? Hell no I’m not that much of an idiot!

  12. Alex says:

Ps, do you feel like you clean the bathroom and do laundry every day? I do. I should doing both right now!

  13. Alex says:

Thanks! I *found* it online for, uhhhhhhh gratis

  14. Alex says:

Sorry that last comment was regarding that 30 day shred thing! I’m dangerous in front of my keyboard tonight…

  15. Twwly says:

Alex – oh yeah, I feel like I am constantly cleaning. The kids LOVE playing with water, but I’d have an underwater house if I let them fill up the tea kettle inside! They’d be watering the couches!

    Gillian – TOTALLY.

Most likely the missing book is under a bed or in the trunk of your car.
So says your aunt the librarian.
