Oh we had a good Halloween this year. Bob went as monkey, Maggie was a chicken, I made myself a little fox mask and Daddy Duncan was Grandma Gorilla in one of the most frightening dusty rose rayon ensembles I have ever laid witness to. OH he frightened children alright.
I have to wait to get pictures in costume from my Mom, but in the mean time here are the kids being cute and our pumpkins… before the chickens ate them.

Trick or treating, just ignore Scott & I. I should warn you that you are at greater risk of keeling over from the cuteness of Bob Monkey and Meeps Chicken than you are from the Pork Roll Flu. Quick! Innoculate yourself with candy!

I have a great eye for furry road kill, but Scott has a wicked eye for the feathered type. I always just think it’s leaves. He found us a hawk about a month ago now and he spotted this beautiful owl (in TOWN!) just last week. The owl is in great shape and we are contemplating taxidermy. So instead of clipping off the head and feet and pretty bits, we stuck the whole thing in the freezer (I keep surprising myself every time I go in there). I hope it’s okay to freeze animals pre-taxidermy, I am assuming it is. We have a home taxidemy kit for skins but this is beyond our capabilities for sure.

Maggie started talking the same week she started walking. She just walked up to me and said “BOOBIES, PLEASE!” which is only further evidence any chance I thought I had of trimming back her amazing number of feeds per day is very small indeed.

Seeing a dead owl is such a heartbreaker-since we had them living in the tree in our backyard in Windsor I’ve had a serious love-on for them. Good that you’re doing something productive with it. Is it an Eastern Screech Owl? That’s my best guess. Our owls were Saw-whets, teeny tiny and very tame. They loved to play in the sprinkler!
My roommate is a wildlife biologist. He recently found a hawk that he’s planning on turning into a skin sample (taxidermy). He learned how to do it in college. He has his hawk in the freezer too, so I assume that your owl will be fine.
Good luck with it!
Maggie’s tattoos are so cute. what did you use to do them? Not only do I think my own little one would look adorable and find it fun…but my mother in laws shocked face would bring sunshine into my day like nothing else could.
Sharpie marker, crayola washes off too fast. The kids go batshit crazy whenever they see a Sharpie!
I love that she asked for boobies. That’s so cute. And your pumpkins look really great.
Pork Roll Flu…….amazing right?!
Meeps’ tattoos are beyond cute.
AMAZING!
It’s great that Maggie is saying “please”, but once they’re able to ASK for “boobies”, it’s time to start stopping!
Michele, we’ll be keeping on. She’s not even 2 yet! Bob self weaned at 21 months, but only because my milk was all gone (preg with Mags). We have no plans to stop, though I’d love to have her nurse a little less at NIGHT! Haha. If she nurses until 3, that’d be just fine with me.
LOVE Pupper’s pirate costume!!!!
Did Bucky get dressed up as well?
I love it!! Your kiddos are both something Xander has been! He was a chicken two years ago and a monkey 3 years ago. This year he was a dragon, same brand too! Ha!
PS-Your husband facial hair makes me miss my husbands, I wish he could still have it
Your kids are just ADORABLE! And nice work on the Jack-O-Lanterns!
I always find pumpkin-carving so exotic having never celebrated haloween before. The pumpkins you guys carved are by far the most professional and expressive looking! Wow.
My dad is a taxidermist, and he always recommends that you freeze roadkill. Your owl should be perfectly fine! Just make sure you find a taxidermist that is good with fowl, as they can be pretty finicky!
after reading your blog yesterday, i dreamed of dead owls last night. more specifically that my husband brought one home adn left it sitting on the kitchen counter.
bob and meeps are super cute in their costumes. asher was a monkey this year too; same costume too. although it was 80 degrees here halloween evening so he ended up in just the pants and a tshirt because he was so so hot in it. he loves his monkey suit; rund around the house sayiing “ooh ooh, aah aah, monkey!” everytime he puts it on
I nursed my first baby until she was 3.5 years old. I’m nursing a 6 month old now (ha! literally) with no plans to stop soon. I can’t wait to hear my baby ask for “boobie, please”!
That is a beautiful owl (and an adorable monkey and chicken)!
I nursed your cousins until they were 2½, 2, and 3 respectively. Don’t recall anyone ever saying “please.” Have to love Maggie’s politeness!
Well I thought Finn was the cutest chicken this year, but I’ve decided he has to be the cutest rooster, because Maggie is definitely the most adorable little hen! And Bob made one heck of a monkey too!
Sweeeet owl, please post the taxidermy when it’s done! The pumpkin is also pretty damn spiffy, but the kids take the cake- I hope they get plenty of use out of those costumes- they look like a fun way to dress up and stay warm during the long cold winter.
You know, I have just freaked my husband out; whilst reading through your journals he looked over my shoulder and saw a picture of your husband Scott… I think they may be separated at birth! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3581/3660866858_6928a6201f_m.jpg this is only picture I have to hand at the mo, and its an old one cos the peanut is just a year now, and his beard is a little tidier and actually looks a lot redder.
