fun pics! the weather looks great up there still!

and your hen looks exactly like our red star sex link that just died. she was broody and wouldn’t leave the nest to eat/drink. it was so sad to find her dead on the nest. :(

    Your Mum is beautiful.

My mom has some awesome tattoos!

Rebecca – that’s sad about your broody hen. None of ours have ever gotten broody in the slightest… which is both good and bad I guess.

  8. Sarah says:

I lurve your photos so beautiful. What type of camera do you use?

Look how clean and tidy gooey-eyes kitty is!

Beautiful fall shots! I’m always amazed at how the autumn lingers when you leave the big city- it actually feels like a real season, not just a week of temperate weather before the snow (which, p.s., I woke up to this morning).

Sarah, just a digital Rebel! Scott’s Elph has more mega pixels than mine, but I use a few different lenses that a point and shoot obviously cannot.

    SNOW!!!!!!!!!!! AGAHAGHAGAH

  13. rebecca says:

do your hens get to hatch chicks? also, how long do you keep your egg layers? do you butcher/eat them or do you have meat birds for that specific purpose?

  14. Twwly says:

None of our hens have ever been even remotely broody. Friends of ours bought an incubator so they could get their own Buff Orphy chicks, which I am hoping to take advantage of.

We raise meat birds for meat, though they will lay eventually. We always buy dual purpose meat birds, this breed that grows well without being non-chickeny like the white rocks, etc. Hens don’t lay until 20 weeks and you kill meat birds between 6-8 weeks usually, though ours have gone for longer.

  15. Twwly says:

Oh and we have kept layers for two years, then eaten them. This batch we are hoping to keep for longer, though we can’t keep them at our farm for the winter. (They’re going to a friends barn with all of their chickens, banded, to party until spring). They’re definitely for the crockpot, even at “only” two years. Not tasty. Too much running around.

this is a little off topic, but I just started reading “Geek Love” and it is amazing!!! Will probably blow off most chores until it is finished. I’d write more about it, but it’s cutting into my reading time. Thanks for recommending it. :)

    Yes! Thank you.

I had H1N1 (along with an entire bridal party) and we all got through the reception, went home, slept it off for a few days, and went back to work. Just like EVERY OTHER FLU I’VE EVER HAD.
