Bob is Three

October 9th, 2009

Bob’s third birthday was great.  We had gotten a fishtank thanks to a savvy yardsale-ing friend for $5 and set it up a week before his Bday with some fish.  We moved into his room while he slept and he awoke to a bubbling tank with an orange fantail goldfish and a black moor.  He promptly named them “Orange Fred” and “Black Fred”.  We find this hilarious, perhaps you do too.

I made cupcakes and icing for the first time, both from scratch.  Scott iced them and I think he did pretty good for his first time:

Bob’s favourite presents were the SPRIG construction vehicles and an alligator puppet from PAPOOSE.  We had a nice party for him, a bunch of his little friends came over.  We hung up the construction paper garland we made and watched the kiddos all go berserk.  Every kid got a cupcake with a candle to blow out and we passed around sparklers to all the guests and set off the fire alarm while singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  I had hoped to be able to give the kids monster truck rides through the field, but it rained.  The rain also took out a nice little bonfire we started before everyone showed up.  But the rain eventually let off, after everyone had left but his real Uncle & Aunt and we set of the last of our summer fireworks stash.

Needless to say, the kids slept soundly after partying their faces off & riding the rails of their buttercream icing highs.

I love the look on Bob’s face in that photo with him and his new trucks. It really reminds me of a pic of my dad when he was a toddler sitting in his highchair. But he was grinning because lunch was on the way!

The fishtank is an awesome idea for a present! Bob certainly has an interesting naming aesthetic!

Damn. I started following your blog when you were pregnant with Bob and posted your pregnancy update photos on Suicide Girls. I can’t believe it’s been tree years already.

    Happy Bday BOB!

Holy wow! Three already?! I met you very, very briefly at Hell City ’06 when you were pregnant with Bob, and it just doesn’t seem like it’s been three years! Happy Birthday Bob :)

Beautiful Birthday pictures! Happy Birthday to your little Bob!

They are all great pictures, but I especially like the picture of Bob and his alligator puppet, you’re in the background with a great laugh and Maggie has a cute little content smile too.

Hannah will be three in December and the fish tank is a wonderful idea, we just might do the same!

As for the names Bob chose it REALLY cracks me up because I use to have a Beta fish named Fred. Good choice Bob!! Hannah is also very literal. I’ve asked her what her name for some of her stuffed animals etc. and she always says “dog” or “cat” until recently. She has this really cute dragon costume and she decided to call it “Drop” for some reason (she also falls asleep wearing it). Who knows what goes on in the mind of an “almost 3 year old”, but they’re so darn funny!

In the picture of the wonderfully decorated cupcakes, how do you get the blur of the background? It seems so perfectly blurred and I’ve seen many pictures like that, but just don’t know if it’s a technique or accidental. Anyway. It looks really neat.

Ash loves his Sprig dump truck too!

  8. Happy Birthday Bob. I hope you enjoy those Sprig eco-trucks.

Monica – the background is blurred because of depth of field… an effect created by the lens and setting of the camera.

David – Thank you, he is enjoying them very much. We’ve got a bunch of Sprig toys, some of the only plastic we allow in our house and the only toys with lights or sounds! My kids love the adventure boat in the bathtub and stories from their discovery rig and we love them too. Great products!!

Love that each party goer had his/her own cupcake with a candle to blow out! Wish I’d thought of that many years ago.
Scott could be on one of those cake decorating shows!
