It has been a great day. Did our chores and went straight into town this morning to the beach. Had a terrific time throwing stones into the water, splashing, digging and dripping mud onto each other. Just as we were leaving the crowds started showing up, it was the perfect little outing. We’ve been at the beach every day for the last four days, trying to take advantage of the good weather we have finally gotten!
Mags was napping by the time we got back, so Bob and I picked all of our calendula flowers. They are steeping in a pot of olive & jojoba oil on my stove, and will continue to do so overnight. I plan on leaving some as oil and making the rest into lotion.

We’ve been talking about cleaning out the kids ‘bedroom’ for a while now. It had just become a storage space. Today Bob asked me if I would clean it out for him. Even though I had planned on tackling my mountain of laundry today, how could I possibly say no. We even moved his mattress out of our room and into it! On his urging! I plan on trying to get them both asleep in there tonight, and bringing Meeps back into the master when she wants to start nursing. She goes to sleep without nursing now, I just pat the pillow and she lays down — but she does nurse 2-3 times in the night, feeds she is not ready nutritionally or otherwise to have limited. She does a good 4-5 hour stretch before wanting a midnight snack though.
I highly doubt this is the end of our beloved family bed, but it will be an interesting new adventure for sure.

Gearing up for a feta making extravaganza with one girlfriend and lots of soaps with another. Planning on tilling under spent portions of the garden and heavily mulching with straw tomorrow. Hoping Scott’s new portfolio (which I put together with Blurb) arrives soon too!
Can’t wait for Scott to get back from Calgary. One more sleep.
I love the divine Miss M in the back ground of the last picture. And what percentage, do you reckon, of Bob is ham? What a cute little boy!
Jealous of your calendula over here.
Can’t wait until soap and lotion making becomes common place in our house.
And jealous of your little girl who goes to sleep so easily. Was there a trick to it? We’re the opposite over here, James climbs into bed and pats the pillow and I’m expected to lay down and pull out the boobie. LOL
Skye, same here. My daughter (2.5+ years old) is very stubborn and still not looking like she’ll “self-wean” anytime soon. I’ve got no idea what to do next, we’ll just have to stick with it a bit longer. She’s fully potty trained (day and night), but not weaned….feels a bit backwards. I don’t mind the family bed though, but wish ours was a bit bigger (as she grows, it’s getting smaller and smaller).
Hope the bedroom thing goes smoothly, wouldn’t it be nice to have just a little bit more room in your bed?
Beautiful pictures of the Calendula, I have not been successful growing them yet, but really wish they would grow for me. I don’t know why, buy maybe next year.

Oh my goodness Ash! Justin and I just came across this little nugget of knowledge today! What a fantastic site this is – how do you find the time for a daily blog AND be Mommy Extraordinaire?! I can’t believe how big the kidlettes are getting – you really have such a beautiful family!
We’re coming to the Kin on Sept 16th-23rd to show off the little yard ape…so I hope we can show off our new goods. You and Scott were completely right – there is nothing like being a mother! Thanks for all the love and guidance from your end – it really helped me get through some tough days… I’m happy to have found you again! Talk to you soon!

Rock on lady
I’m really curious to know about the “no more nursing to sleep” situation. Did you end that phase, or did she? I only ask because my 7 month old nurses to sleep (well, until he’s drowsy) and I’ve been ‘warned’ that I need to get him acclimated to not nursing to sleep, or FACE THE CONSEQUENCES. The only thing is that NO ONE can tell what the consequences are.
My little boy loves to nurse. It’s a relationship we had to work hard at to establish, and it provides him a ton of comfort. I do see why I might need to eventually need to get him to not nurse before sleeping, but I’d rather not put him through that if I don’t have to.
So, give me a retaliation story? You can email it to me if you’d like!

Hi,
We have lots of skin problems in our family. Would you be willing to share how you make the calendula lotion? What are the ingredients and how many flower heads are needed in relationship to the amount of oil used?
Joanne Books
Joanne – I am an eyeballer, so I am quite useless for recipes. I pick as many calendula heads as I can, I make sure they are WELL covered in olive oil and I let them sit on stove over LOW heat for at least 24 hours.
I blend it with varying amounts of shea butter, jojoba oil, essential oils and whatever else I happen to have in my cupboard at the time of making!!
