Gobs of Goats

July 28th, 2009

Pictures from our morning goat chores.  I do have to get video of these little sprites leaping straight into the air like popcorn, and the absurd squeaky bleats they make.  All of our goats, except Bucky (who is a mutt) are Nigerian Dwarf Goats.

Making chevre today.  Ordered a bunch of new starters and moulds from Glengarry Cheese Co today. And black cheese wax (ROCK AND ROLL!)

Also hoping to do as many loads of laundry as my well can handle.  Here’s a nightmare room mate story for you: friends of ours own a house in the country.  After making it clear their roomies to be careful with water use, lest they run the well dry… said roomies decided to test that boundry by running several loads of laundry and taking a HALF HOUR LONG* shower.  They actually ran the well dry and killed the pump.  (Brutal!) Thankfully our friend drills wells and was able to bring some equipment and a hand home from work to fix it himself.   SO.  I am going to limit myself to three loads.  You know, for the good of my well.

*I am aghast!  Not only is that a disgusting waste of water, but I am tremendously, bitterly, murderously jealous over the idea that one could just stand in one place for half an hour!  Not only undisturbed, but clearly free of any pressing task!

Meeps has her check up this Thursday.  She seems worse if anything despite being on this course of ABX.  Apparently they ABX work for 5 days after they are finished, so I am hoping that some miracle happens between now and Thursday and we won’t have to give her anymore.  It’s next to impossible to get her to take it.  I tasted some myself to see what she was spitting back in my face… and it has a STRONG, truly yucky flavour.  It SMELLS sweet, but it tastes powerfully bitter.  I can just imagine children being scolded for not taking the “yummy medicine” -  parents having been fooled by the smell into thinking it might taste like candy.  Just like the parents who scold their children for complaining our community pool is too cold (I swear the temperature they post is at least five degrees above actual temperature; I am shivering my ass off in 10 minutes).  And the parents who tell their children the NO-STING shampoo doesn’t sting (it really and truly DOES sting, go ahead, put some in your eyes if you don’t believe me!)

Mind my tangent.  Anyway.  Hopefully Mags is better soon.

Enjoy today’s goats!

    oh my gosh! love!

yeah, and why does every childrens medicine have to be bubblegum scented and BRIGHT PINK?!?! dont they know that shit doesnt come out of clothes?

  5. Ginger & Pickle says:

those are the sweetest little baby goats! what fun! you really do take fantastic pictures, Ashley!
Mags!! Get better soon! Are you allowed to mix her antibiotics with some honey/jam/apple butter? (I’m sure you already tried that…)

Those goaties are too cute, my gosh. I’d be picking them up and kissing them all day long if I were allowed.

And as per half hour shower: I have all the time and water in the world and still wouldn’t do that, not just because the waste would be entirely shameful, I wouldn’t know what to do, what takes that long?!? I am never THAT dirty!

  7. Gillian says:

i love em!!! i grew up with goats, as i said when i was at your house, and just miss the baby ones so much!! i love how they come out looking and acting like real goats, unlike our young… so cool.

  8. rebecca says:

esmee loves them! so do i! so cute! and nice new doors.

  9. Jessica says:

Aaah! So cute! I love their dopey little eyes. And the heart carved into the door. My fella saw that and said to me “the goats will get out through that hole… you watch” haha. He seems to distrust goats a lot though.

  10. Jamie says:

Hope Maggie feels better soon, the goats are soooooooooooo cute it’s damn near obscene! And if you’re waxing cheese…can you ship it??????

  11. Jamie says:

Missed the Med thingy…I have tasted the gnarly “bubblegum” meds I’ve been given..it’s HORRIBLE. But my kids will eat the chewable meds, Vince and Bella did before they were a year and a half, I let them know it wasn’t candy, but it was better than the liquid meds.

The goats are so gorgeous, especially the mama!! The mental picture of them bouncing around gives me infinite pleasure!! Yes, some medicines are sooooo bitter. If only she could chase it with some honey but that may be difficult to get her to take too, you wouldn’t be able to get it in quick enough for it to mask the bitterness. Aaaaand the no sting shampoo hurts just as much as the regular stuff you are absolutely correct. Poor kids. People think they can just tell them what they want and that should be the end of it. Finally, I live on a well too and I am astounded by neighbours who pressure wash their houses for hours, dump kitty litter at the side of their houses (cat shit is toxic, stupid) and use bleach and other chemicals regularily…scary.

  13. Hayley says:

Plus I hope Meeps starts to feel better soon. Are you able to get her to breath any eucalyptus oil or anything like that?

  14. Sarah says:

    AAAAHHHHH! So, so cute!

  15. Monica says:

Soooooo cute! I love the pictures, thanks for sharing! I used to raise sheep and love the spring when it was lambing time. The lambing period was hard, but after they were all settled and a few weeks old it was a blast to watch them all play! Running up and down the piles of mud/poop, standing on their moms (poor mommy’s, trying to catch some zzz’s and they get jumped/stood on), and mock fighting. So funny!

I think when we get “a place of our own”, I want to get goats for Hannah. I think she’d love them. I think I will go for goats rather than sheep since goats are quieter (although they probably are more tricky to keep in their pens).

Poor little girl of yours! Still hoping she’ll get better soon. What sort of homeopathic things have you tried?

    Take care!

congrats on the new members to the family. they are beautiful! The heart in the door… amazing. My girlfriend was living out on a farm with a pen of goats and as soon as they learned they could get out they were humping the house with their horns and eating her giant sunflowers – hysterical little creatures. She also had a little piglet that would always get out of its pen and sit on her back doorstep and try to get in the house. We used to say we were going to knit it little asspants and take it out as another child haha. thought that would give you a giggle.

    poor meepsickle!!

  17. talby says:

I’m disgustingly, murderously jealous of those goat babies! Holy hell are they adorable :)

  18. Mars says:

The no sting shampoo generally has some kind of local anesthetic in it, which burns like hell on contact with eyes! In fact, it hurts more than normal shampoo!

FYI – I shared your tetnus titre story with the Dr’s and a few others at my work, and they were quite impressed! I think a few Dr’s in this area will be getting asked to test tetnus titres soon! :)
