When we got Scott’s 2009 schedule last summer and marked off the ’09 holidays, I scheduled myself some tattoo appointments. It isn’t safe to be tattooed while you’re pregnant and I disagree with La Leche League and don’t feel that getting tattooed while breastfeeding is particularly safe either. (The molecular weight of most tattoo pigments ARE actually small enough to pass through breastmilk. To elaborate a bit more: I think the risk of harm would be next to nil for small tattoos, and the less breastmilk babe is eating, the less risk there would be too). So I made the appointments for when I figured Meeps would be eating a fair amount of solids, which is right now. But since we had to stop feeding her solids (she was barfing up anything that wasn’t breastmilk) I had to let my precious, much awaited tattoo appointments slip by. Bit of a downer for me, since I haven’t been tattooed properly for years now and am chomping at the bit.
But good things come to those who wait… my darling dearest drew a rough of my backpiece on me the other night (though he’s going to handle my ass-antler cover up a bit differently than in the pic) and 9 month old Meeps has eaten solids for four days in a row without any vomiting! She has been nibbling away at Hack Bread (we buy our bread from biodynamic, organic farming neighbours; it’s made from freshly ground spelt and rye flour and is supercharged with goodness), banana, kale, rice, steak and sweet potato. An unexpected bonus from the solid food eating is that she has only been nursing 1 or 2 times a night! So when I do manage to get a tattoo appointment with my husband I’ll be well rested!

time’s approaching and i cannot wait to get in with scott too, if the offer’s still open? since i’m not pregnant and ash will only be nursing at night, i’m not worried.

Hey Ro! It’s the face of the goddess Kali. We’ve got a giant Kali mask at the foot of our bed. She’s generally depicted with her tongue out, and with a necklace of human heads. She’s pretty great stuff. I wanted something to represent my…. kids, my births, my turn down the motherhood path and she was it. I was looking down at that mask over my midwife’s head while giving birth and really felt that energy flowing around.
Covering up the ass antlers because it would be a waste of a nice back piece to have them sitting underneath it. Aesthetically it would look terrible. I’m still fond of the old tattoo, no regret or anything. Just doesn’t work with what I’m currently after so I’ll cover it up.
No idea how long it will take. Scott has been using some giant needle configurations so hopefully it wont take too long at all!

Awesome! I bet you can’t wait to have that all done and finished. I got tattooed for the first time in a year after Adelaide when I was in Boston in January. It wasn’t a big piece or anything but it was a wonderful thing to just to be able to do it again. I really missed it whilst I was pregnant. Moreso I think because I couldn’t! I gave my little chicken some baby rice this last week for the first time… she absolutely bloody loved it and now I feel so bad eating anything in front of her. I can see her eyeing up my fork and dribbling extra hard. This morning as I munched on my toast must have been like torture for her. Still waking a bunch of times for food though during the night, but I don’t want to add in anything else for a while yet, so maybe when I do full on ween she’ll sleep properly?! We live in hope!
I remember reading your post somewhere on SG where you said that you still have your back reserved for tattoos (it was a long time ago, so I don’t remember the exact phrase, sorry). And ever since I’ve been so curious to see which tattoo are you getting next, because I simply love the other tattoos you have

Wow! Your back piece is gonna be loverly! I still have designs on a tiny wrist tat and now an idea to mark motherhood….but I will take our advice and ait til babe is off the boob! Next summer….
