1. Tooth grinding. Maggie got her two bottom teeth first. Then came the two top teeth. As soon as they poked through her pink gums, she was grinding them together. Bob did the same thing, and still grinds. (Sounds like he is breaking his teeth sometimes). I am going to go out on a limb here and declare tooth grinding The Most Annoying Noise Children Make. I feel that it even trumps whining. The whining, I can just take a deep breath and start laughing (on the inside) so that I don’t go crazy. But the tooth grinding? There is no potential for delirious comic relief. It’s just downright AWFUL, period.
2. “Why dont you get a cell phone?!” We hear this a lot. Two reasons. One, cell service out here is spotty at best. If we get into an accident, even if we HAVE a cell phone, we’d still have to walk to the nearest farm house to make a call. Two, if I am away from the phone, it’s for a reason. If I am away from the phone, I’m DOING STUFF. I’m busy. I’m gardening or doing my grocery shopping in peace. If there is death or disaster, I’ll get the message and get back to you tuite suite. Those same people who chide us for not having cell phones and extoll their virtues, citing the value of being able to reach someone when necessary, immediately…. are always the ones who never pick up their phones.
3. “You look great… for having two kids.” Ahem. Yeah. Thannnnnnks.
In balance to this: how colossally cute are these Japanese fabrics?! The only thing cuter are the patterns.

(Wantwantwant).
We ditched our cell phone as well due to lackluster signal. If we walked to the top of the laneway we could get a signal. Otherwise not. There was no way I was paying for two cell phones that couldn’t provide service. The funny part was when we called to cancel our service they said we had a contract. I explained the lack of service and their reply was that since we moved it was our fault. Since the contract was signed at our old address it was our responsibility. It took Corrie a full month of calls before someone finally took pity on us and let us cancel the (non) service.
That fabric’s awesome. Love the Japanese stuff. There are Japanese crochet books that I covet so deeply…oh, just the cutest stuff in the universe. Reprodepot also has amazing stuff.
Re. Cellphones: I hate them. They give people the license to be rude, and that makes me mental. I have one now-yes-but I have moved 4 times in the last 2 years and it just makes more sense. But before I had one, people would blame ME when they were late for meeting up because they couldn’t reach me. “You should get a phone” they’d say. Hum.
Jeepers that site is full of such cute stuff, I want it all. I’m a sucker for cute animal prints.
Big fat no to cell phones, I hate them, I have one and it’s pointless. I haven’t even turned it on in days, nobody contacts me on it so I feel like a billy no mates and it never has any reception. If I didn’t need it to keep track of my teenage sister when I look after her I’d bin it.
#3 is my BIGGEST annoyance. Nothing can snap me out of a good mood faster than hearing someone say that. Ugh. Only thing that i can think of that’s worse is “You look great for being pregnant!”.
I CANNOT STAND the tooth grinding. I give Ash the “YOU BETTER STOP RIGHT NOW” look and he usually stops, thank fuck, because it makes me want to rip out my hair.
I looooooooove Japanese prints. They are always so cuuuuuuuuute! fabricshoppe.etsy.com has a wonderful selection of fantastic prints, Japanese and not.
And just as I think I have the fabric for my new kitchen curtains narrowed down to two choices, I go and click on the superbuzzy link. Drat.
We’ve only got 2 bottom teeth so far over here… I had no clue about the grinding!
I’m having trouble really believing that anything could trump whining though. That’s one of those things that no one warns you about while you’re pregnant. It’s like some sick little joke that parents play on you by omitting that info… Then it’s like, SURPRISE! Welcome to the most annoying sound in the world. Better get used to it, because you’re going to hear it day in and day out for a long time!
If teeth grinding is really worse than whining, I’m in a lot of trouble!
UNF UNF UNF. This is me wildly humping the air over fabrics.
I cannot believe how much of a hard on I get over fabric. It is truly ridiculous! WHO AM I?! I had absolutely no idea fabric could be so deliciously enticing.
I drove all over hell’s half acre yesterday to the various (and far apart) Amish fabric shops just to find a half yard of camel coloured flanellette for a little goat I’m sewing. The first place was closed of course, alas one cannot call ahead to see if the “Saturdays By Chance” includes THIS saturday and then when I did get to an open one, I made the fatal mistake of asking if they carried ZIPPERS (as one of the places I go to does sell zippers even though the Amish cannot use them themselves). Anyway. I got the quiet look of death and felt like sliming my way out the door like the piece of filth zipper user I am!
Fuck, fabrics. DELICIOUS fabrics.
Anyone know where I can get good buttons? Like wood ones? I used to get some buttons at Courage My Love, but we never get outta town to get there….
– And yeah Rachel, you’re in for it once those top teeth comes I bet!!! Brace yourself!
Totally unrelated, but is there any chance that you’ll be heading to Calgary with Scott for the convention this fall? I was just on the site and saw his name. It would be great to meet you in real life after reading your blog for so many years.
Siobhan,
Unfortunately no, I won’t be going. Meeps is still so terrible with travel, I haven’t been farther than a half hour drive away from home since she was born. (She goes BERSERK in the car seat… 3 hour drive to Toronto + a flight… I can’t imagine anything I’d like less sadly).
If he likes the show I’ll definitely join him there in the coming years though and would love to meet you!
That’s too bad that she’s still having trouble with travel. I hope for your sake and hers that she gets better soon. I’ve been in contact with my friend and tattoo artist from Taiwan, Diau-an, and it looks like there’s a good chance that he’ll be doing a guestspot here in Vancouver and then attending Calgary. I’m excited to introduce him to Canada. In other news, if things go according to my plan I’ll have a little one by the time the 2010 convention rolls around.
HOLY CRAP! I didn’t even SEE the patterns!
An order is going to have to be placed for some lovely stuff from Super Buzzy.
I’m staying with my folks at the moment and the fabric shops here are awesome! Mother and I are heading out into the (30 degree plus humidity) heat to hit the fabric shops tomorrow. Then, she can babysit while I sew!
And yeah on the tooth grinding. When Sparkles first started doing it (8 months), I thought, “My God! I’ve already given the child a nervous habit! What kind of parent am I?”

I have a cell, but I try not to be obnoxious about it. It drives me crazy when a friend will stop in mid-sentence to answer a text or call. I guess they’re hoping someone more interesting is on the other end!
I hope you get this in time: I am going to Kensington tomorrow and will pick up buttons for you if you like.
Email me. Tell me what you want!
and ps how cute is this dress?

i’ll post pictures later.
hope you are doing well!
ill second etsy for wood buttons-you can also commission someone to do wood buttons for you, it may not be as pricey as it sounds.
I think that people forget that they are not entitled to other people’s time.
“You look great… for having two kids.”
I’ve been watching your blog for quite some time now, and in my personal opinion you look better after having two kids! Of course, I can only judge by photographs I see here, but I think you look more healthy and glowing now ))
